THE J is the second pedal in our “Analog amp emulator” series. This concept aims to capture what you hear from an amplifiers. I’ve been friends with Jesse Hoff for years, several years ago I cheekily suggested I’d like to capture what his flagship Lazy J the “J20” sounds and feels like. To my delight Jesse agreed, and we began working our magic together. In the pedal development we made sure that the enhanced chewy tweed tones of the J20 were covered tonally but as always, we went further than the initial scope of design. Fitted with a high-quality transformer, the pedal reacts to your playing and overdrives and feels like a full-size amplifier.

THE ”J” as an Analog amp emulator can work fantastically well with your existing amp, your existing pedals and it integrates easily into your current rig. You can use it to create beautiful, enhanced tweed “LAZY J – J20” vintage amp sounds or craft your own sound. Tested worldwide during its development on the biggest of stages, you can be confident the “J” will deliver.

CONTROLS

  • LEFT FOOTSWITCH: ON/OFF. Turns the pedal on and off, true bypass.
  • RIGHT FOOTSWITCH: Switches between the Normal and Bright Channel.
  • OUTPUT: This is the Master Volume and controls overall output.
  • RESPONSE: A subtle presence adjustment control.
  • SUPPLY: Emulates the Voltage attenuation control in the J20- Full clockwise is full voltage, anything below this emulates voltage attenuation.
  • NORMAL: Controls the volume/gain for the normal channel.
  • TONE: This allows you to dial in the EQ you’d like for the pedal, from dark to strident.
  • BRIGHT: Controls the Volume/Gain for the Bright channel.
  • X / Y SWITCH: This allows you to select what emulated input valve you want, 12AX7 for medium gain tones and 12AY7 for lower gain drive.

POWER: THE J is designed to be powered by a 9V DC centre-negative 2.1mm power supply. Internally the voltage is bumped up to 18V. Do not attempt to use this pedal with other voltages or polarities. We have power protection circuitry in our pedals and use of any other voltages will shut the pedal down and require return to ThorpyFx HQ for repair. This will not be covered under warranty.

Amp — An amp pedal, often referred to as an amp simulator pedal or amp modeling pedal, is a type of effects pedal designed to emulate the sound and characteristics of various guitar amplifiers. By using digital or analog processing, these pedals replicate the tonal qualities, gain stages, and tonal response of different types of amplifiers, such as vintage tube amps, high-gain modern amps, or classic solid-state models. Amp pedals are typically used to shape a guitarist’s tone without needing to rely on multiple physical amplifiers. They offer a range of preset or adjustable sounds that mimic the effects of different amp types, including their distinctive overdrive, distortion, and EQ settings. Some amp pedals also include additional features like cabinet simulations, which mimic the sound of different speaker cabinets, and built-in effects like reverb and delay. This makes them a versatile tool for achieving a variety of tones and sounds, whether in a practice setting, recording studio, or live performance, providing convenience and flexibility in a compact form..
