Now in its fourth iteration, the Direct Drive brings a colossal catalog of vintage British voice to your pedalboard. Full to the brim with reactive tonal choices, the Direct Drive features a Direct Drive Low Gain (LG) and Super Sport style overdrive into one clean and compact pedal. Completely handmade by David Barber and a team of two, each pedal is hand-soldered and made with over 30 years of pedal and amp building experience.

Updated in 2020 with a fresh look, The Direct Drive V4 now has 3 levels of midrange which is selectable with 3-way toggle, and a gain switch expanded to 3-way toggle switch which adds a 3rd hyper dynamic “4 in input” style sound.

Key Features

  • Two Overdrives – The left switch is a harmonics toggle that delivers the elastic-bells of GZ34-sag, to the hells-bells of a tight EL34-crush instantly.
  • Versatile, Responsive Tone – Use the right 3-way toggle switch to go between a low british style gain, middle for more of a marshall sound, then toggle to the right for a full-throttle JCM800 style high gain tone.
  • Expertly Handmade – The Compact Direct Drive has real honest solder lugs for jacks, a true-bypass footswitch, toggles and pots. Nothing but the best tried and true hand-built methods adorn the interior of the Barber Electronics Direct Drive to always ensure maximum quality.

If you are using humbuckers or P90s and going into a clean amp then this pedal is for you. If you like the sound of the early UK combos with KT66 tubes, it’s in there. Want the sound of a 4 input guitar amp head with a wall of 4×12 cabs? It’s in there. If you live for the sound of a carefully modified master volume gem from the early 80’s, it’s in there too.

Simple Layout

The Compact Direct Drive uses a simple layout of three knobs, a gain toggle and a harmonics toggle to deliver the elastic-bells of GZ34-sag, to the hells-bells of a tight EL34-crush.

Handmade, Hand-Soldered

The Compact Direct Drive has real honest solder lugs for jacks, a true-bypass footswitch, toggles and pots. Nothing but the best tried and true hand-built methods adorn the interior of the Barber Electronics Direct Drive. The Direct Drive has a generous 2 1/2” of clearance between the front edge of the footswitch and the back edge of the knobs, no fear about accidentally changing your settings with each click of your footswitch.

Specifications

  • Power: Current draw 12ma, 9-18 VDC negative tip. (power adaptor not included)

Overdrive Pedals

Overdrive pedals add warmth, grit and amplifier-like breakup to your guitar tone. They can be used as a light always-on tone enhancer, a bluesy crunch box, a mid-focused solo boost or a way to push a valve amp into richer saturation.

Different overdrive circuits have very different personalities, from transparent low-gain pedals to classic mid-hump designs and heavier modern drives. They are one of the most important pedal types because they respond to picking dynamics, guitar volume and the character of your amplifier.

Overdrive

Overdrive pedals recreate the sound of an amplifier being pushed harder, adding warmth, breakup and sustain while still responding naturally to picking dynamics and guitar volume changes. They are one of the most important and widely used pedal types in modern guitar rigs.

Different overdrive circuits offer very different flavours, from transparent low-gain boost-style pedals through to mid-focused classic rock tones and heavier amp-like saturation.
