The JHS Little Black Buffer is an absolutely necessity for anyone running big pedalboards and long cable runs. Buffers are one of the most overlooked pedals but one of the most important because they’re not about doing wild and wacky things to your tone, they’re about making sure you tone stays pure and true all the way from guitar to amp, which can be a long journey for many guitarists!
All that cable run and true bypass pedals eventually dull the tone, putting a buffer in the chain gives the signal a little extra push that makes sure it gets to the amp as sparkling and true as it left your guitar!
Here’s what JHS Pedals say about the Little Black Buffer
This may be the greatest weapon you didn’t know you needed.
For those of us who are a little “pedal happy” there can be some downfall to our tone. When running a pedal board with more than one or two effects, something called “capacitance” happens. This natural problem happens due to the amount of cable or line that your signal has to travel through, not to mention bad switching systems in certain pedals. The result is a very audible amount of high-end loss, weak signal, flabby bass and uncharacteristic pickup behavior in guitars. Another problem is the assumption that all “true bypass” is good. This isn’t true and actually can be worse than imagined.
This is were the “Little Black Buffer” steps in providing the perfect input impedance to your rig and giving you the final result of clear, natural tone that sounds like you’re plugged straight into your amp no matter how many pedals you use.
Plug your guitar straight into the input then out into your pedal chain. No need for a switch. It runs on any standard 9v supply. This measures 3.6″x1.5″x1″

Buffer
A buffer pedal is used to preserve the quality and integrity of a guitar’s signal as it travels through a pedalboard. Its primary function is to maintain the signal strength and tonal clarity, especially in setups with multiple effects pedals and long cable runs.
When a guitar signal passes through a series of effects pedals and long cables, it can experience signal degradation, resulting in a loss of high frequencies, reduced clarity, and increased noise.
A buffer pedal addresses this issue by using active circuitry to “buffer” or isolate the guitar signal from the effects chain.
This helps to prevent signal loss and tonal degradation, ensuring that the signal remains strong and clear throughout the entire signal path.
Buffer pedals are especially useful in complex pedalboards where multiple pedals and long cables can otherwise negatively impact the guitar’s tone.
Guitar Effect Pedal
A guitar pedal, also known as an effects pedal, is a device used by guitarists to alter the sound of their instrument in various ways. These pedals are typically small, foot-operated units that are connected in a signal chain between the guitar and the amplifier. They can modify the guitar’s tone, pitch, and dynamics by applying different effects such as distortion, reverb, delay, chorus, and more. Guitar pedals come in both analog and digital formats, and they allow musicians to create a wide range of sounds, enhancing their musical expression and creativity. They are essential tools for guitarists in genres ranging from rock and blues to jazz and electronic music.

The JHS Overdrive Preamp is a faithful replication of the unobtainable V1 of DOD’s most loved pedal The Level control adjusts the overall output of the circuit and lets you cut or boost the signal. The level control of this version has been modified (corrected) from the original wiring of the #75 unit, giving this pedal much more volume on tap. The Gain control adjusts the amount of gain inside the overdrive circuit. Turning up “Gain” creates more clipping as it pushes the op-amp and hard clipping into overdrive. We’ve also added a slider switch to this production version, which wasn’t included with the original DOD 250. While researching the #75 “Big Box” pedal, I acquired a second early big-box unit which used a completely different clipping arrangement. It only seemed fair to offer this switch so that you could explore these two variations for yourself. This “Big Box V1” DOD 250 circuit definitely feels like a 250, but with a few changes: more gain/grit overall and more unique low/m…
