After a decade in production, the JHS Kilt is back with a fresh voice and a slick new look. This isn’t just a facelift — the updated clipping section gives you more headroom, a smoother attack, and a drive range that’s richer and more dynamic than ever before. In short: it’s everything you loved, but turned up a notch!

Where it began

Back in 2015, JHS Pedals teamed up with Stu G (legendary guitarist and founding member of the UK band Delirious?) to create the ultimate dirt pedal. Stu needed something that could handle anything — studio sessions, world tours, you name it. From that challenge, the Kilt was born. And since then, it’s been one of JHS’s most popular overdrive/distortion stompboxes.

The evolution of overdrive

The original Kilt stood out thanks to its clarity, versatility, and responsiveness. But over time, players asked for a few tweaks: extra headroom for cleaner tones, a more noticeable flat/cut toggle, and better control over low-gain textures. The Kilt 10 answers all those requests while keeping the DNA that made guitarists fall in love with it in the first place.

What’s new?

  • A new look: Polished aluminium finish (a nod to the original Kilt V1), classic Expandora-style knobs, and a redesigned Kilt icon that cleverly combines the Scottish flag with a Roman numeral “X” for ten years.
  • Improved gain control: The gain knob now gives you a more usable range from 0–25%, unlocking articulate, low-gain textures that were previously out of reach. No dead zones — just smooth, musical breakup from subtle to saturated.
  • Enhanced high-end clarity: The top-end has been refined so your tone cuts through the mix with ease — perfect for live gigs where clarity matters.
  • More volume headroom: Extra output means more responsive tone across your rig, whether you’re hitting a clean amp or stacking drives.
  • Refined toggles: The gain toggle switches (G1 & G2) now offer more usable parameters while keeping the original feel. The Low-Cut toggle is more amp-friendly than ever too, working great with everything from valve amplifiers to modern modellers.
  • Upgraded clipping circuit: A new diode setup adds touch-sensitive feel and nuance without losing the Kilt’s core character. Expect slightly more compression and extra distortion on tap.

Key Features

  • Volume: Sets your output level. Turn left for less, right for more. Thanks to the extra headroom, you won’t need to crank it past noon anymore. And you’ve got plenty of room to use it as a clean boost when you need that extra push.
  • Gain: Adjusts how much drive you’re working with. Left for subtle, right for savage. The first quarter of the range is now super usable, giving you transparent, low-gain textures that weren’t possible before. Push it further and you’ll hit that classic, gated fuzz territory.
  • Tone: Controls brightness. Left is darker, right is brighter. It’s a refined high-frequency control that adds clarity and plays nicely with a wider range of amps.
  • G1/G2 toggles: These two switches unlock up to four clipping options. Both down = lowest gain. Flip G1 up for more overdrive. Flick G2 up for more fuzz. Both up? That’s the heaviest gated fuzz the Kilt can deliver! Bonus: G2 can also be triggered with a Red Remote (for on-the-fly fuzz madness).
  • Low-Cut toggle: Down is flat EQ. Up is the “cut” mode, which trims the lows for a leaner tone.

Fuzz Pedals

Fuzz pedals produce a thick, saturated and often unruly form of distortion with a character all of its own. From smooth vintage sustain to gated, spluttering and synth-like textures, fuzz is one of the most expressive and distinctive effects in guitar history.

Players use fuzz for psychedelic rock, garage, stoner rock, doom, indie, shoegaze and experimental sounds. It can feel more like an instrument than a normal drive pedal, responding strongly to guitar volume, pickup choice and playing dynamics.

Overdrive Pedals

Overdrive pedals add warmth, grit and amplifier-like breakup to your guitar tone. They can be used as a light always-on tone enhancer, a bluesy crunch box, a mid-focused solo boost or a way to push a valve amp into richer saturation.

Different overdrive circuits have very different personalities, from transparent low-gain pedals to classic mid-hump designs and heavier modern drives. They are one of the most important pedal types because they respond to picking dynamics, guitar volume and the character of your amplifier.

Fuzz

Fuzz pedals create thick saturated distortion with a raw and highly expressive character that differs significantly from standard overdrive or distortion pedals. Vintage-inspired fuzz circuits remain hugely influential in psychedelic rock, doom, garage, shoegaze and experimental music.

Different fuzz designs respond very differently to pickups, guitar volume and playing dynamics, allowing players to move between smooth sustain, gated textures and aggressive spluttering tones.

Overdrive

Overdrive pedals recreate the sound of an amplifier being pushed harder, adding warmth, breakup and sustain while still responding naturally to picking dynamics and guitar volume changes. They are one of the most important and widely used pedal types in modern guitar rigs.

Different overdrive circuits offer very different flavours, from transparent low-gain boost-style pedals through to mid-focused classic rock tones and heavier amp-like saturation.
