Here's what EarthQuaker Devices say about the Sunn O))) Life V3

Sunn O))) and EarthQuaker Devices are pleased to bring you the Life Pedal Volume III. The Life Pedal V3 circuit has been meticulously tweaked from the original to squeeze every last drop of heavy crushing tone available. The octave section has been fine tuned to make it more pronounced without losing the bottom end and we added a third footswitch, utilizing Flexi Switch Technology, for the octave to allow an additional method of quick and radical tone shaping. We are excited to have this back in permanent production, it is a true labor of love.

Life Pedal V3 is a distortion with a blendable analog octave up and a booster combined in one compact package. The “Amplitude” side is faithfully modeled after the classic “White Face” distortion unit, using modern, reliable components to last a lifetime. The only modifications made to the original circuit are in the clipping section. The traditional circuit uses a single pair of silicon diodes for a tight, compressed crunch.

As with version 2, Life Pedal V3 offers two additional clipping options to better adapt to different rigs. The first position is no diodes to allow for full, grinding Op Amp assault at maximum volume. The second position utilizes two silicon diodes and one LED in an asymmetrical clipping configuration. This delivers a slightly compressed and smooth crunch, similar to a valve amplifier. The last position is the stock double silicon diode configuration which provides that classic tone you know and love.

EarthQuaker Devices

In the current JustPedals catalogue, EarthQuaker Devices is represented by Octave Pedals, Fuzz Pedals and Overdrive Pedals. Current listings include Organizer V2, Hoof Fuzz V2 and Buffer/Splitter. That makes the range relevant to players looking for drive, gain and clipping, plus time-based effects and ambience. Check each model for its exact circuit or processing platform, controls, power requirements and connections, particularly where the catalogue includes both pedals and supporting gear.

Octave Pedals

Octave pedals generate one or more notes above or below the input, either by analogue tracking, digital processing or a blend of both. Monophonic circuits often track best with clean, single-note playing; polyphonic designs can handle chords more reliably but may introduce a different feel or latency. Controls such as octave-up, octave-down, dry level, filter and tracking range shape the result. Check the intended instrument, register, input impedance and whether the pedal remains stable before or after other gain effects.

Analogue

Analogue products use continuous audio circuitry for some or all of the signal path, so clipping, filtering or modulation arises from physical components rather than sampled algorithms. The label does not guarantee a particular tone; component choice, headroom, bias, noise and the surrounding gain stages still matter. Check whether the switching, presets, control section or cabinet stage is digital when the exact signal path is important.

Boost

Boost pedals raise level, add gain or do both. A clean boost mostly preserves the source voice and pushes the next gain stage harder; a coloured boost changes the frequency balance as it lifts the level, while treble or mid boosts narrow the emphasis deliberately. Gain, output, tone, presence and headroom shape the result. Place the boost before overdrive for more clipping, after gain for more level, or into a clean amp when a louder signal is the aim.

Distortion

Distortion uses deliberate clipping to add harmonics, compression and sustain. Some circuits are voiced for amp-like crunch, others for high-gain rhythm or an abrasive texture. Gain, tone, presence, resonance, blend and noise-control features determine how the pedal interacts with pickups and the next stage. Before choosing, decide whether it will push an amplifier, run into a clean platform or feed a cabinet simulation, because the same control settings can behave very differently in each route.
