EarthQuaker Devices

Musician Jamie Stillman founded EarthQuaker Devices in 2004 after moving from pedal repair into circuit design. The first full-production release was the Hoof fuzz in 2007. The company develops its pedals in-house in Akron, Ohio, where it hand-builds and hand-tests them and backs them with a lifetime guarantee. Current JustPedals examples show the range’s practical and exploratory sides: Ghost Echo reverb, Data Corrupter harmonizer, Avalanche Run delay and reverb, and Rainbow Machine pitch shifting. EarthQuaker’s own design philosophy pairs usable controls with sounds that can move well beyond conventional effects.

Octave Pedals

An octave effect generates notes one or more octaves above or below the input. Analogue circuits often create raw monophonic sub-octaves, while digital pitch tracking can follow chords and provide several intervals with cleaner separation. Tracking speed, polyphonic accuracy, latency and the balance of dry, upper and lower voices determine whether the result feels tight, organ-like, synthetic or deliberately unstable.

Boost

Raises signal level and may also reshape the frequency balance before the next stage. A clean boost preserves the waveform until headroom is exceeded, while coloured designs emphasise particular frequencies or add mild clipping that changes how later gain stages respond.

Distortion

Clips the waveform firmly and adds a dense series of harmonics with compression and sustain. The clipping devices, gain stages and tone filters determine whether the result is tight, smooth, mid-focused, scooped, grainy or deliberately abrasive.
