The Roland  JC series of amplifiers broke every rule set by amp manufacturers for what made a popular amplifier. They are solid state combo amplifiers with built in effects with a stereo speaker setup. So why are they so popular with musicians in every genre for bright and punchy clean tones- Because they really do sound amazing even when compared to much more expensive valve based amplifiers. With everyone from Metallica to Pat Metheny using this amp for their clean tones you have probably heard thousands of tracks that all use this range of amps.

Now for 2015 Roland have introduced this incredible new small and lightweight version the JC-40. This smaller version of the JC-120 may feature just a third of the power but that is still more than enough to be heard over a full band at small to medium sized venue. So if you are looking for one of the worlds most iconic clean tones or want a flat clean response to let your pedals create the tone you won't find much better than the JC-40

Signature Clean Tones
The Roland JC-120 was not just your normal little clean combo. It features unparalleled clean headroom and inbuilt analogue chorus effects so that you could just take your amp from gig to gig no extras required.
All of these characteristics had to be maintained in the JC-40 to keep it sounding like its legendary big brother but they didn't just leave it there. After all it would be far too easy just to lower the power and call it a new amplifier. That is why the JC-40 has completely revoiced vibrato, distortion and reverb effects that can take you from old school to new school with a single control.

Single Channel – Let Your Pedals Sing
While the original JC-120 did have two channels in recent years when pedals have become a must have for all guitar players most just use the one channel. This gave Roland the unique opportunity to cut the size of the amp significantly without needing to get rid of the iconic sound that made the amp so famous.

By having such an incredible clean sound this amp is the perfect pedal platform. So if you are the kind of guitarist that can't stop acquiring little boxes of tone joy then this is a must have amp to get the most out of your gear. With a full 3 band EQ and a bright switch on the front panel you can make any combination of pedals fit in to the mix.

Built In Effects
OK now this is a part of the amp that is often looked over but the hint is in the name. Originally called the Roland Jazz Chorus thanks to its jazz friendly tones and built in chorus this amplifier is much more useful than you originally thought.
With not only chorus but vibrato, reverb and distortion already available in the amp via an optional footswitch even if you don't have a plethora of pedals you can still achieve a great range of vintage and modern tones from this solid state masterpiece.

Full Stereo Connectivity
Without amplifiers like this if you wanted to get a full stereo effect on your guitar you had to use two different amplifiers and some special wiring tools. Now with the age of the stereo effect this amplifier can not only be used in stereo on the input but also in the effects loop stage. This means you can have your two amp setup all in one unit cutting down on just how much gear you need to take to your next gig.

Here's what Roland say about the JC-40

Chorus Pedals

Chorus pedals thicken your guitar sound by blending the dry signal with a slightly delayed and modulated copy. The result can range from a gentle shimmer to a wide, lush, 1980s-style modulation effect that makes clean tones feel bigger and more spacious.

They are often used on clean arpeggios, jangly rhythm parts, fretless-style bass tones and dreamy ambient passages. A chorus pedal is a great choice if you want movement, width and a more polished sound without completely changing the character of your playing.

Chorus

Chorus pedals create the illusion of multiple guitars playing together by blending the dry signal with a subtly modulated duplicate. The result ranges from gentle shimmer and width through to lush swirling modulation associated with classic 1980s guitar tones.

Chorus remains popular for clean arpeggios, ambient textures, fretless-style bass sounds and atmospheric rhythm playing. Stereo chorus pedals can create especially wide and immersive sounds.

Stereo

Stereo guitar pedals process left and right audio channels separately, creating a wider and more spacious sound than a standard mono setup. Stereo delay, reverb and modulation effects are especially popular for ambient, cinematic and modern live rigs where depth and movement are an important part of the tone.

Running a stereo setup can dramatically change the feel of a guitar rig, particularly through two amplifiers, studio monitors or headphones. Ping-pong delays, wide choruses and immersive reverbs all benefit from stereo operation and can create a much larger soundstage.
