Some of the very best guitar tones were created going “direct-in” to a studio console. It had been almost impossible to recreate that exact tone for live playing – until the arrival of the JHS Pedals Colour Box. Now in its second iteration, the all-encompassing preamp stompbox receives some much welcomed updates, including phantom power, an expanded EQ and a high headroom switch.

The Colour Box V2 produces a clean, studio-grade sound in the style of a Neve console, of which you might find at Abbey Road Studios and other famous recording locations. You can rely on the Colour Box to be the foundation to your tone, whether you’re running it in your amp effects loop or in a smaller power amp-to-PA setup.

Controls

A new set of EQ controls expand the Colour Box’s already impressive tone shaping abilities even further. The treble, mid and bass shift dials adjust specific frequency ranges, letting you put more emphasis on finer details in the spectrum. Meanwhile, the Hi/Lo gain switch allows for a broader selection of gain stages. You can crank the volume with more headroom on a Lo setting, or switch over to Hi where it distorts more readily for crunchy and fuzzy goodness.

Great for Instruments and Vocals

JHS Pedals found musicians weren’t just using the Colour Box with electric guitars – it produces incredible tone for acoustics, bass, synths, drums and even vocals. That’s why the Colour Box has a 100% clean signal to accommodate all instruments, as well as an XLR slot and 48v phantom power for microphones. The pad switch adjusts the level for XLR to help tame high output mics.

Preamp & Amp Sim Pedals,

Amp and cab simulator pedals recreate the sound and response of guitar amplifiers, speaker cabinets and microphones in a compact pedal format. They are useful for recording direct, practising silently, running straight into a PA, or building a pedalboard that does not rely on a traditional amp.

Many amp and cab sims include different amplifier voices, impulse responses, EQ controls and headphone outputs. They are a strong choice for modern guitarists who need consistent tone at home, in the studio and on stage without carrying heavy amplifiers and speaker cabinets.

Preamp

Preamp pedals and related effects are commonly used by guitarists looking to shape their tone in a more focused and creative way. Different designs offer their own response, feel and tonal character depending on the style of music and the type of amplifier or guitar being used.

Many players build pedalboards gradually over time, combining different effects and utilities to create a setup that suits their own sound and workflow. Preamp related gear can play an important role in both live performance and studio recording.
