The Bass Clone by Electro-Harmonix is a chorus pedal by Electro-Harmonix that’s almost identical to its guitar brother, the Small Clone, with a few added functions to make it more suitable for bass. The Clone is a famous chorus, most notably used by Kurt Cobain from Nirvana. It has a deep, lush texture that keeps a brilliant clarity that keeps a very low signal to noise ratio.

It’s got a dedicated EQ control so that you control the chorus signal to avoid your bass signal getting too muddy. The treble will affect the whole signal, whereas the bass control, will not affect the modulated signal. it will only change the dry signal.

X-Control

A chorus pedal feeds a dry signal as well as modulated signal to the amp at the same time. This is what creates that ‘out of sync’ sound and because of this, you can get some frequencies overloading each other. The X-Control toggle allows you to remove the low-end from the modulated signal completely. So you can still have that chorus texture but without it interfering with your bass tone.

Here’s what Electro-Harmonix say about the Bass Clone

The Bass Clone chorus pedal’s core circuitry is nearly identical to the legendary Small Clone chorus, but with added features especially for bass. Chorus is a combination of modulated and dry signals.

The Bass Clone’s Crossover switch cuts low end from the modulated signal so the pedal delivers a more accurately articulated bottom end with excellent note definition. The Treble control affects the whole signal while the Bass control only affects the dry half.

Together with the Crossover switch they provide precise sound shaping that lets you achieve a tight, focused bass guitar sound with a well-defined low end and shimmering chorus on top.

Electro-Harmonix (EHX) is a legendary effects pedal company founded in 1968 by Mike Matthews, known for pioneering some of the most iconic sounds in music history. Based in New York City, EHX offers a vast range of pedals, from the classic Big Muff fuzz and Memory Man delay to innovative effects like the POG and Freeze. Renowned for their creativity, durability, and affordability, Electro-Harmonix pedals have shaped the tones of countless musicians across genres, from rock and punk to ambient and experimental music.

Bass

In the realm of guitar effects, “bass” pedals are designed specifically for bass guitars, enhancing their low-end frequencies and allowing bassists to shape their tone and explore new sonic possibilities. These pedals cater to the unique characteristics of the bass guitar and provide various effects to modify its sound. For instance, overdrive and distortion pedals add gain and saturation, giving the bass a gritty or distorted tone. Compression pedals help even out dynamics by smoothing out the volume of loud and soft notes, resulting in a consistent and punchy sound. EQ pedals enable bassists to sculpt their tone by boosting or cutting specific frequencies, allowing them to emphasize certain parts of the sound or compensate for room acoustics.

Other popular bass effects include envelope filters, which produce dynamic filter sweeps in response to playing dynamics, adding rhythmic groove to bass lines. Octave pedals generate harmonies one or two octaves below the original note, creating a fuller and more powerful sound. Modulation effects like chorus, flanger, and phaser add depth and movement by modulating the pitch or phase, creating swirling textures and enhancing the overall presence of the bass line. Lastly, delay and reverb pedals introduce ambience and spatial depth, adding echoes and reflections that enhance the sense of space in music. These diverse effects allow bassists to expand their sonic palette and express their creativity in numerous ways.

Clone

In the world of guitar effects, a “clone” refers to a pedal or effects unit that emulates the sound and function of an existing, often iconic, pedal. These clones are crafted to replicate the tonal qualities and operational characteristics of the original pedals, which might be vintage, rare, or highly coveted. Clones are particularly appealing because they often provide a similar sonic experience at a much lower cost than the originals. This makes them accessible to musicians who want classic or unique sounds without the premium price tag associated with authentic or vintage models.

Clones are also popular because they often enhance the original designs by incorporating modern features or improvements. Builders of clone pedals might add true bypass switching, superior components for increased reliability, or additional controls for greater versatility. This makes clones not only a more affordable alternative but sometimes even a preferable choice due to their enhanced functionality and durability. Consequently, clone pedals enable musicians to experiment with a wide range of tones and effects without the financial commitment, making them a valuable resource for guitarists looking to expand their sonic palette.
