Distortion Pedals

Distortion pedals use stronger or more deliberate clipping than a typical overdrive, adding harmonics, compression and sustain. Some are voiced to imitate a pushed amplifier; others offer tight modern gain, scooped aggression or abrasive, gated texture. Gain, tone, presence, bass, clipping options and output headroom determine how the pedal interacts with pickups and the next stage. High gain is not automatically better gain: too much low end before clipping can become woolly, while too much treble after it can turn fizzy. Match the circuit to the amplifier and tuning.
