Fuzz pedals push a signal into intentionally non-linear clipping, often producing strong sustain, compression and harmonic roughness. The circuit may be gated and spluttering, broad and woolly, bright and cutting, or rich in octave content. Germanium, silicon, op-amp and hybrid designs each respond differently to input level, temperature, pickup impedance and the guitar volume control.
