The ZVEX Effects Box of Rock is an extremely popular distortion pedal. Able to accurately imitate the iconic tones of a cranked Marshall JTM45 amp, the ZVEX Box of Rock's unique "Distortron" circuit delivers a stunning saturated sound and is extremely reactive to your playing dynamics – just as you'd expect from a vintage Marshall valve amp.

This "Vertical" version of the Box of Rock features the exact same circuitry as the original, albeit with a more conventional chassis that some players might find easier to mount on their pedalboards.

2-in-1 Design

Featuring two footswitches, the ZVEX Effects Box of Rock is essentially a 2-in-1 pedal with a boost side and full-out distortion channel. Able to use the two sides independently or together for thick unbridled gain – the Box of Rock gives you plenty of tonal options.

The ZVEX Box of Rock's high-headroom boost circuit offers plenty of extra volume, which can be controlled via the dedicated 'Boost' control. It's worth noting that the boost channel follows the distortion channel so that the distortion is able to hit your amp harder when both switches are engaged, offering a potent dose of "more" for solos and lead lines!

Marshall-Style Distortion

ZVEX Box of Rock pedal gets most of its appeal from its authentic, Marshall-style drive circuit. Punchy and clear with lots rich harmonic content, this powerful distortion channel can get the most out of practically any amplifier that it's plugged into. And once you’ve set your maximum amount of gain with the 'Drive' control, you can use your guitar’s volume control to adjust for the exact amount of distortion you need.

To influence the pedal's EQ, a single 'Tone' knob allows you to adjust the amount of treble. Keep it low for a smooth and vintage-like sound, or crank it higher to achieve and more contemporary tone with extra "bite" to cut through in a mix.

Boost Pedals

Boost pedals increase your signal level, helping solos stand out, pushing an amplifier harder or adding extra presence to your tone. Some boosts are clean and transparent, while others add colour, midrange, grit or brightness depending on the circuit design.

A boost pedal can be used before overdrive to add saturation, after drive pedals for a volume lift, or at the start of the chain to strengthen the guitar signal. It is one of the simplest but most useful pedals for live players and tone-shapers alike.

Distortion Pedals

Distortion pedals create a heavier, more aggressive gain sound than most overdrive pedals, giving guitarists the sustain, bite and saturation needed for rock, punk, metal and hard-hitting lead tones. They can turn a clean amp into a high-gain platform or add an extra layer of intensity to an already driven sound.

Some distortion pedals are tight and modern, while others are raw, fizzy or vintage-inspired. Choosing the right one depends on whether you want chunky rhythm tones, singing sustain, scooped metal sounds or a classic hard-rock voice with plenty of attack.
