The Mooer Black Truck is a portable and powerful multi-effects unit that can be easily transported to rehearsals and gigs, especially with its dedicated carry case. Providing you with 6 individual effect modules, this affordable floorboard is an all-encompassing alternative to the traditional pedalboard, with all of the essentials at your disposal.

Although it is flexible enough for a variety of styles, the Black Truck has been designed with hard rock and metal players in mind, especially with its built-in hi-gain distortion module.

6 Essential Effects

Tuner – The most important feature of the Black Truck is of course its tuner, as if you're not in tune, anything you play will sound bad! With a fast and highly-precise response, this accurate tuner will ensure that you're always ready to deliver the goods.

Space – To the right of the tuner you'll find the 'Space' module, which delivers time-based reverb and delay sounds. With the ability to use these effects independently via a toggle switch, you can also use them in unison for a truly engulfing and ambient experience. With the reverb and delay sections featuring the 2 and 3 essential controls respectively, you can easily manipulate their sounds to add a subtle extra dimension to your playing, or even set them up in an extreme manner for experimental tones.

Mod – The Black Truck's Mod section gives you access to three key modulation effects, letting you embellish clean arpeggios or riffs with some musical movement. Allowing you to select Phaser, Tremolo and Flanger effects, you can easily affect their sounds via thoughtful Colour, Range and Rate controls, as well as a timing knob for more precise control of the effect speed.

EQ – An underrated effect, EQ can let you shape your tone unlike anything else. With control over 5 key areas of your guitar's frequency spectrum, you can boost or cut the lows, mid-range and highs to achieve very particular sounds. It can also be used to compensate for deficiencies in your amp's base tone. For example, if you're running into a dark-sounding amplifier, you can raise the highs to ensure that you can cut through in a live mix.

Hi-Gain – This is where it really starts to heat up! The Black Truck's built-in distortion will give you pure metal tones at the press of a footswitch. With Tone and Tweak controls, you can influence your sound and fine-tune it just the way you want. However, we'd recommend using the Hi-Gain module in conjunction with the EQ, if you're really fastidious about your tone. A Mid switch enables you to add more punch, while the Gate switch will cut down excessive noise if you really crank the gain.

Comp/OD – For adding some squeeze to clean sections for a more consistent sound, the Black Truck's compressor section will handle it. With dedicated Volume and Comp controls, you can easily balance your signal output if you want an extreme compressor sound for funk, or a subtler and more natural sound.

The OD section works like a traditional overdrive, and when fed into the Hi-Gain distortion, you can really tighten up your sound and attain more saturation. With both the compressor and overdrive circuits engaged by a single footswitch, you can choose to turn off the compressor via a toggle switch on the front panel if you don't want it blended with the overdrive.

Modern Control

Although the main purposes of the footswitches are to engage and disengage each effect module, you can also use them to control the parameters of the delay and modulation sounds too. By pressing footswitches 1 and 2 together, you can set the time of the delay repeats, giving you an ergonomic tap-tempo function. The same applies for footswitches 2 and 3, but you instead influence the modulation rate, which is particularly useful for the tremolo effect. 3 and 4 together lets you manually control the tempo for the delay and mod sounds at the same time, for a hypnotic, synchronized vibe.

With stereo outputs, you can take full advantage of the time-based and modulation effects, giving you a three-dimensional spread. An integrated effects loop also allows you to place other pedals within the Black Truck's signal chain, but it also means that you can set up the Black Truck using the popular 4-cable method.

A direct output lets you also run the Black Truck into an audio interface or mixer for recording and live performance applications, with its speaker simulation convincingly emulating that traditional mic'd up cabinet sound.

Delay

A delay pedal records your signal and plays it back after a set time, creating echoes that can range from tight, slapback repeats to long, atmospheric trails. It’s one of the most versatile effects, used to thicken tones, add rhythmic depth, or build spacious, ambient layers. Analogue delays offer warm, decaying repeats that blend naturally with your tone, while digital units provide pristine echoes with precise control over time, feedback, and mix levels.

From classic rockabilly and tape-style echoes to modern looping and shimmer effects, delay pedals have become essential tools for shaping sound. They can make solos soar, rhythms pulse, or transform simple chord progressions into cinematic textures. Whether used subtly to add dimension or boldly to create soundscapes, a good delay pedal can completely redefine the feel and atmosphere of your music.

Distortion

Distortion pedals take your clean guitar signal and transform it into something bigger, bolder, and full of attitude. By clipping the waveform, they add sustain, bite, and aggression, creating that thick, compressed tone that’s powered rock music for decades. From the growling crunch of classic hard rock to the tight, saturated roar of modern metal, distortion is all about energy and presence. It gives every note weight and authority, pushing your amp to its limits and beyond.

There are countless flavours of distortion, each with its own texture and edge. Some sound smooth and creamy, others raw and gnarly like tearing fabric. It’s the sonic equivalent of turning up the heat until the sound cooks — rich, sizzling, and perfectly seasoned to taste. Whether used for rhythm muscle or soaring leads, a good distortion pedal doesn’t just add volume; it adds personality, grit, and that unmistakable sense of power under your fingers.

EQ

While Ed Sheeran primarily relies on the natural sound of his acoustic guitar and vocals, he occasionally uses EQ (Equalization) to shape and enhance his tone during live performances or in the studio. EQ pedals or onboard preamps can allow him to adjust the frequency response of his guitar signal to suit the acoustics of different venues or to achieve specific tonal characteristics. Here’s how EQ might be utilized in Ed Sheeran’s setup:

1. **Tonal Shaping**: EQ can be used to adjust the balance of frequencies in the guitar signal, allowing Ed Sheeran to shape his tone to his liking. For example, he might boost the midrange frequencies to bring out the warmth and presence of his acoustic guitar, or cut certain frequencies to reduce any harshness or mud in the sound.

2. **Feedback Control**: In a live setting, EQ can help control feedback by notching out problematic frequencies that might cause the guitar signal to feed back through the amplification system. This can be particularly useful when performing in venues with challenging acoustics or high volume levels.

3. **Room Correction**: In situations where the venue’s acoustics are less than ideal, EQ can be used to compensate for any deficiencies in the sound. By adjusting the EQ settings, Ed Sheeran can tailor the guitar tone to sound more balanced and natural, regardless of the room’s acoustic properties.

4. **Matching Gear**: EQ can also be used to match the tone of Ed Sheeran’s guitar to the sound of other instruments or equipment in his setup. For example, he might adjust the EQ to complement the tonal characteristics of his vocal microphone or to blend seamlessly with backing tracks or other instruments.

Overall, while EQ may not be a central component of Ed Sheeran’s guitar effects setup, it can still play a valuable role in shaping his tone and ensuring that he achieves the desired sound in different performance environments. Whether used subtly for tonal shaping or more aggressively for feedback control, EQ allows Ed Sheeran to tailor his guitar tone to suit his musical vision and performance needs.

Overdrive

Like a golden layer of melted cheese — warm, gooey, and just put it all over. It adds just the right amount of richness and grit, turning a clean signal into something smooth and savoury. Designed to mimic the natural breakup of a tube amp pushed to its sweet spot, overdrive delivers the flavour of classic rock and blues in every bite. From creamy mid-gain warmth to crisp edge-of-breakup sparkle, it’s the comfort food of guitar tone — simple, satisfying, and endlessly versatile. Whether it’s a mild crunch or a full-bodied roar, overdrive is where good taste begins.

Tuner

A tuner is an essential pedal or device that helps keep your guitar perfectly in tune by detecting the pitch of each string and showing whether it’s sharp or flat. Tuners come in many forms, from simple clip-on units to advanced pedalboard models with bright displays and muting options for silent tuning on stage. They ensure accurate pitch, stable tone, and a more professional sound, making them one of the most important tools for any guitarist.

Volume

Volume pedals control the output level of a guitar signal using a foot-operated treadle. They allow smooth volume swells, dynamic control during playing, and easy muting between songs. Volume pedals can be placed at different points in the signal chain to either control overall loudness or adjust gain and drive behaviour when positioned before distortion or overdrive pedals.
