Following the overwhelming success of their Odyssey and Subspace overdrive pedals, Hamstead has decided to resurrect one of its very first stompboxes – the Signature Tremolo. The new MkII version has undergone a number of revisions, most notably packaged in a more compact enclosure and now featuring a flexible 'Shape' control as well as 3 tremolo modes!

Here's what Hamstead says about the Signature Analogue Tremolo MkII:

Tremolo is one of the earliest effects to be applied to the electric guitar, and its timeless quality has ensured its popularity across genres up to the present day. The Hamstead Signature Analogue Tremolo is our take on this classic effect, with of course some of the refined analogue engineering that Hamstead Soundworks is known for.

The MKII Signature Tremolo takes the circuit straight out of the Artist +RT series amplifiers and packages it into a pedal board friendly format, while adding some additional features. The ‘Signature’ mode is our true sinusoidal wave modulation for the cleanest, smoothest and most musical sounding tremolo. Switch to ‘Classic’ mode for a more vintage feel, replicating the familiar tremolo sounds found in vintage amplifiers and thousands of seminal records from the 1950s to present. The MkII model adds a ‘Triangle’ mode which is far more natural sounding than the angular name suggests, and is particularly useful when used with the Shape control.

Wave Shaping is another new feature for the MkII, allowing the ability to tilt any of the waveforms to the left or right. In Triangle mode this can create both up and down saw tooth waveforms for more modern tremolo effects, and can really accentuate the thump of output bias trem in Classic mode.

With speeds ranging from 0.4 to 15Hz controllable by the either Speed knob or an external expression pedal or high/low speed remote, this pedal offers superb versatility and playability. The Depth control sets the level of the effect from subtle modulation movement that you’ll never want to turn off, through to aggressive side chain style pumping volume.

The feature set is rounded off by a Gain control that can provide a boost of up to 10dB to really accentuate the trem effect, push the front end of an amplifier or compensate for perceived volume loss on the Classic mode. The Signature and Triangle modes have the same internal volume compensation as the Artist series amplifiers, so gain can just be used as a boost if desired.

The Signature Analogue Tremolo MKII uses an OptoKick foot-switch from the GigRig for silent and reliable switching and is built at the Hamstead Labs outside Cambridge to the same high spec as all Hamstead Soundworks products. All circuitry including waveform creation is 100% analogue.

Controls

  • Signature: Our sine-wave modulation circuit straight from the Artist +RT series amplifiers.
  • Classic: Vintage output of bias style tremolo.
  • Triangle: A perfect triangle waveform allowing natural feeling tremolo through too pulsing modern volume modulation effects.
  • Speed: Controls the speed of the modulation or sets the highest speed when used with an expression pedal or High/Low remote switch.
  • Depth: Controls the depth of the modulation from 0 to 100%.
  • Shape: At the centre indent in the 12 o’clock position the waveform is it’s standard shape. Turning the control anti-clockwise tilts the waveform to the left, and clockwise tilts the waveform to the right.
  • Gain: Controls the gain boost from 0 to +10dB.
  • Internal switch selects Power Up mode: When the Signature Tremolo is powered up it can be set to be ON or BYPASSED. If used with a switching system such as TheGigRig Quartermaster or G2 we recommend setting to POWER UP ON, whereas if used alone or with other in line effects we recommend POWER UP OFF.

Tremolo — A tremolo pedal modulates the volume of your guitar signal up and down in a rhythmic pattern, creating a pulsing or wavering effect that can sound vintage and hypnotic or sharp and choppy depending on the settings. It’s one of the oldest effects in guitar history, famously used on classic amps from the 1950s and ’60s. Most tremolo pedals let you control the speed, depth, and wave shape, allowing you to go from smooth, subtle swells to intense stuttering tones. It’s a simple but expressive effect that adds movement and character to your sound..
