If you’ve ever picked up a guitar magazine, browsed our pedal section or watched a rig rundown video wou’ve probably come across the EHX SoulFood or Nano POG pedals. 2 great little additions to any pedal board…. Now EHX have combined the two into this…. the aptly named Soul Pog.
So what’s the benefit of buying this rather than the two seperatly?
Well this takes two very popular peals and gives them a tune up. You can use them together, seperatly and in any order. A mode switch on the Nano POG chooses between two algorithms for the octave-up sound: one for fast, single-note playing, and one that maximises harmonic content of chords. You even get an effects loop built in.
Here’s what EHX have to say about this pedal
Combines two sweet pedals—-the Soul Food transparent overdrive and Nano POG polyphonic octave generator—-in one potent multi-effect. Use them alone or together, put either first in the chain, insert other pedals between them with the FX loop. Also includes a cool Mode switch for a choice of two different octave-up sounds. The versatile Soul POG delivers award-winning overdrive and flawless polyphonic octaves in any combination!

An octave pedal shifts the pitch of the guitar signal up or down by one or more octaves, adding depth, thickness, or a synth-like quality to the sound. Some pedals generate a sub-octave for a deep, bass-like effect, while others create upper octaves for a sharp, organ-like tone. Many modern octave pedals allow multiple octave layers and polyphonic tracking, enabling chords as well as single-note riffs. Octave effects are popular in genres ranging from rock and blues to funk and experimental music. Well-known octave pedals include the Boss OC-5, Electro-Harmonix POG series, and MXR Blue Box, offering a range of classic and modern octave-shifting tones.
Overdrive is a popular guitar effect that creates a warm, distorted sound by amplifying the signal of an electric guitar, typically using a pedal or an amp’s built-in circuit. The effect simulates the natural distortion that occurs when a tube amplifier is pushed to its limit, creating a rich, harmonic response that adds sustain, warmth, and character to the tone. Overdrive pedals are commonly used to add grit and growl to a clean tone without the harshness of full distortion.
The overdrive effect works by boosting the input signal, causing the amplifier to break up and clip the waveform, resulting in a smooth, musical distortion. This is often more subtle and less aggressive than other forms of distortion, making overdrive pedals ideal for blues, classic rock, and country players who seek a dynamic sound that responds to their playing touch. Overdrive pedals can be used in conjunction with other effects like delay and reverb to shape a more complex, evolving sound. Popular overdrive pedals include the Ibanez Tube Screamer, the Fulltone OCD, and the Boss OD-3, each offering different tonal characteristics, from smooth and bluesy to punchy and aggressive.
A pedal is an electronic device that alters the sound of an electric guitar by applying various effects. Pedals are typically connected in a series between the guitar and amplifier, allowing guitarists to switch effects on and off with their feet while playing.
This enables musicians to quickly and easily change their sound, adding versatility and creativity to their performances.
Pedals are essential tools in many musical genres, including rock, blues, jazz, and metal, allowing artists to craft distinctive and dynamic soundscapes.
Once you buy one, you can’t stop and then you have to sell them and buy more.
