Upgrading a classic overdrive. The Boss SD-1W Waza Craft Custom Super Overdrive Pedal takes on the mammoth task of attempting to refine and improve the near-perfect original SD-1 design. The original SD-1 has earned its legendary status based on 40 years of peerless performance thanks to one clever feature- asymmetric clipping. Most overdrive pedals clip symmetrically giving a slightly thinner sound thats because asymmetrical clipping creates more harmonic overtones. This gives a richer thicker sound overall. This design feature is patented by Boss (Roland) meaning the SD-1s are the only overdrive pedal that can offer this incredible tonal secret.

Boss

BOSS began in Osaka in 1973 as MEG Electronics, a company dedicated to effects. Its first BOSS-branded effect was the CE-1 Chorus Ensemble in 1976; the OD-1, SP-1 and PH-1 launched the compact-effects series in 1977. The JustPedals catalogue includes familiar overdrives and distortions such as the OD-3, SD-1, BD-2, DS-1 and MT-2 Metal Zone, as well as utility items such as the PCS-20A cable. BOSS now spans compact pedals, multi-effects, loopers, tuners and controllers. Manufacturing origin should be checked by model rather than inferred from the brand’s Japanese history.

Overdrive Pedals

Overdrive uses soft or moderate clipping to add harmonics and compression while retaining more of the original note shape than heavy distortion. Some circuits emphasise the midrange and trim bass before clipping; others remain broad, transparent or amplifier-like. Gain, clipping arrangement, headroom and tone filtering decide whether it supplies a light edge, a saturated drive sound or extra push into another gain stage.
