The Boss RE-201 Space Echo is one of the most iconic effects units ever made. Introduced in 1974, the tape-based RE-201 quickly became a favourite among guitarists and studio wizards who adored its unique rhythmic echo sounds, warm character, and highly-playable sonic quirks. However, it was produced for just over 14 years — making originals rare and highly sought-after. But now, you can attain those inspiring and otherworldly sounds courtesy of the Boss RE-202 Space Echo pedal!

Backed by Boss' intensive R&D and their latest innovations, the RE-202 faithfully replicates the spellbinding tones of the Space Echo like never before. Built by the company that designed the original, this sophisticated stompbox harnesses the RE-201’s magic in flawless detail — from the magnetic tape and motor properties, to the vibrant spring reverb and colourful preamp circuit. But in typical Boss fashion, they've gone a step further and expanded the vintage Space Echo experience with plenty of modern features tuned for today's generation.

RE-201 Space Echo: A Coveted Classic

The Roland RE-201 Space Echo was a game-changer when it came out. Equipped with three evenly-spaced tape heads and a spring reverb tank, it was capable of producing anything from clean, single delays to dense, rhythmic echoes and ambient washes. But there was more to it than that. The RE-201’s appealing sound was influenced by many factors, from the warm compression of magnetic tape saturation to the evolving modulation produced by motor speed fluctuations, friction, and other elements. Analogue preamp circuitry was also a key ingredient in the Space Echo’s rich sonic recipe.

A Masterpiece Brought Back To Life

Boss' engineers painstakingly analysed several vintage RE-201s to ensure that their RE-202 brings the complete Space Echo experience to life in a versatile modern pedal. Reproducing all of the complex, non-linear behaviours that contribute to the RE-201’s immortal character via all-new algorithms — including the tape path, record/playback mechanism, motor variations, preamp colouration, tape age, spring reverb character and more — the Boss RE-202 really is something to behold!

Retro Sounds, Without The Reliability Woes!

Attain the full vintage vibe of the RE-201 without any of the hassle — no regular tape replacement and hardware maintenance required! For those familiar with the original unit, all the core controls remain — including the famous 12-position mode selector. Every quirk is replicated with complete accuracy, such as the gradual pitch change that occurs when the 'Repeat Rate' knob is tweaked, or the cool runaway feedback that happens when the 'Intensity' knob is maxed.

Selectable 'Tape Age' and 'Variable' controls let you dial in everything from a brand-new Space Echo sound to the worn character and idiosyncrasies of a vintage example. The 'Saturation' control has been carefully calibrated based on the actual magnetic tape and preamp behaviours of the RE-201, with the sound becoming warmer and more compressed as you turn up the knob. And with the expressive 'Wow' & 'Flutter' control, you can harness all of the natural modulation characteristics essential to the classic Space Echo sound.

Sonic Improvements

While clearly vintage-inspired, the Boss RE-202 boasts all of the contemporary features you'd expect from an advanced delay pedal. Twice the delay time is available, along with a fourth virtual tape head that unlocks five additional sound combinations. There’s also an echo type that changes the distance between the heads, something not possible with the original. In contrast with the mono RE-201, the RE-202 provides true stereo I/O and selectable operation for guitar or line-level devices. For the dry sound, you can choose between the warm and fat RE-201 preamp tone or a clean signal with zero processing.

Also included is a stereo version of the original spring reverb sound from the RE-201, along with hall, plate, room, and ambience types for additional versatility. Expressive 'Warp' and 'Twist' effects are possible too, allowing you to launch the sound into outer space with the press of a footswitch while performing.

Memories, MIDI & More!

Four onboard memories let you store and recall your favourite sounds, with 123 more accessible via MIDI. Tap tempo is also available, as well as selectable delay carryover when switching memories. It’s also possible to mute the dry signal for parallel effect setups and studio usage, while expanded control is available via external footswitches, an expression pedal, and MIDI — including real-time operation of multiple parameters at once.

Founded in 1973 as a division of the Roland Corporation, Boss quickly became synonymous with high-quality effects pedals that are popular among guitarists and musicians worldwide. Boss pedals are renowned for their rugged construction, intuitive controls, and signature sound quality. The company offers a comprehensive lineup of effects pedals covering various categories, including distortion, overdrive, delay, modulation, and more. Just Pedal Ingredients.

Delay — A delay pedal records your signal and plays it back after a set time, creating echoes that can range from tight, slapback repeats to long, atmospheric trails. It’s one of the most versatile effects, used to thicken tones, add rhythmic depth, or build spacious, ambient layers. Analogue delays offer warm, decaying repeats that blend naturally with your tone, while digital units provide pristine echoes with precise control over time, feedback, and mix levels. From classic rockabilly and tape-style echoes to modern looping and shimmer effects, delay pedals have become essential tools for shaping sound. They can make solos soar, rhythms pulse, or transform simple chord progressions into cinematic textures. Whether used subtly to add dimension or boldly to create soundscapes, a good delay pedal can completely redefine the feel and atmosphere of your music.. Echo — An echo pedal, also known as a delay pedal, is a type of guitar effects pedal used to create repetitions or echoes of the original guitar signal. Echo pedals are popular for adding depth, ambiance, and rhythmic patterns to guitar tones, and they are widely used across various music genres, from rock and blues to ambient and experimental. Here are the key features and functions of an echo pedal: 1. **Delay Time**: This control adjusts the amount of time between the original signal and the delayed signal. Longer delay times result in more pronounced echoes, while shorter delay times produce tighter, slapback-style effects. 2. **Feedback (or Regeneration)**: The feedback control determines the number of repeats or echoes produced by the delay pedal. Increasing the feedback setting results in multiple repeats, creating a cascading effect of echoes. Careful adjustment of the feedback control allows you to dial in the desired amount of repetition without overwhelming the original signal. 3. **Mix (or Blend)**: The mix control adjusts the balance between the original (dry) signal and the delayed (wet) signal. Higher mix settings emphasize the delayed signal, while lower mix settings maintain the clarity and integrity of the original signal. This control allows you to blend the delayed signal with the dry signal to achieve the desired balance and level of effect. 4. **Tap Tempo**: Some delay pedals feature a tap tempo function that allows you to set the delay time by tapping a button in rhythm with the music. This feature is particularly useful for synchronizing the delay effect with the tempo of a song or performance. 5. **Modulation**: Many delay pedals include modulation controls that add modulation effects, such as chorus or vibrato, to the delayed signal. Modulation can add warmth, depth, and movement to the delay effect, creating a more immersive and dynamic sound. Echo pedals offer several creative uses and applications for guitarists: – **Spatial Effects**: By adjusting the delay time, feedback, and mix controls, echo pedals can create spacious, atmospheric effects that simulate the sound of a room, hall, or cavern. These effects add depth and dimension to guitar tones, creating a sense of space and ambience. – **Rhythmic Patterns**: By syncing the delay time with the tempo of a song using tap tempo or preset rhythmic subdivisions, echo pedals can produce rhythmic patterns and textures that enhance the groove and feel of a performance. – **Texture and Movement**: By introducing modulation effects to the delayed signal, echo pedals can add texture, movement, and character to guitar tones. Modulated delays create swirling, shimmering effects that enrich the sound and captivate the listener’s ear. Overall, echo pedals are versatile tools that offer a wide range of creative possibilities for guitarists. Whether used subtly to add depth and ambience or used more prominently to create rhythmic patterns and textures, echo pedals can enhance your guitar tone and inspire new musical ideas..
