The Wampler Cryptid Fuzz is a versatile fuzz pedal that brings together Brian Wamplers favourite aspects of classic fuzz designs within an original circuit. Inspired by the character of Fuzz Face Tone Bender Big Muff-style and Velvet Fuzz circuits it covers everything from fat vintage leads and immense fuzz to clearer more controlled sounds. It also offers plenty of distinctive territory of its own giving you familiar fuzz flavours without simply recreating one particular vintage pedal. Volume Tone and Fuzz controls provide familiar starting points while the Character control dramatically changes the pedals response and texture. A three-position Tight switch reshapes the low end moving from huge doom-ready sounds towards tighter distortion-like tones while the Chime switch adds harmonic air without becoming harsh. The Cryptid also responds closely to your guitar cleaning up as you reduce your guitar volume and working equally well on its own or stacked with other drive pedals.

Fuzz pedals push a signal into intentionally non-linear clipping, often producing strong sustain, compression and harmonic roughness. The circuit may be gated and spluttering, broad and woolly, bright and cutting, or rich in octave content. Germanium, silicon, op-amp and hybrid designs each respond differently to input level, temperature, pickup impedance and the guitar volume control. Fuzz is therefore unusually sensitive to placement: some pedals want to see the instrument first, while others prefer a buffered or driven signal. Judge the cleanup, noise and low-end behaviour as carefully as the maximum gain.
