The Jekyll & Hyde overdrive from Visual Sound was one of the best drive/distortion combo pedals you could by. But with a new name comes the need for a new design so the Truetone Jekyll and Hyde V3 features some great options.

Jekyll

Jekyll is your overdrive channel. He was once a mean overdrive with a great sound but unfortunately not the most powerful option and it made the switch to the Hyde a bit jarring. Now in the V3 pedal you have a completely redesigned overdrive based on their old ‘Oped Road’ overdrive.

Controllable with the same Drive, Volume and Tone controls on the V2 model as well as the new Bass and Clean options. You now have ultimate control over this unique drive which goes from a soft background crunch to a more in your face rock vibe.

Hyde

Hyde is a vicious distortion channel that may not have insane levels of gain but delivers some incredible tones. This can take you from a classic soft distortion that is bordering on overdrive to a crushing higher gain setting perfect for heavier rock styles.

If you have ever used any of the Visual Sound Jekyll & Hyde pedals this sounds very similar. Over previous versions you gain a new bass control which works alongside the treble control and a great voice switch to cover both classic and vintage styles.

Switching and Wiring

While plenty of other companies offer two in one pedals not many have this many options. You can use this pedal either stock where you go in to the distortion and out of the overdrive. There is also an option to switch it the other way round or use them as two completely independent pedals in your signal chain.

Here’s what Truetone say about the Jekyll & Hyde V3 Overdrive and Distortion

Bob Weil and Visual Sound first introduced the Jekyll & Hyde pedal to the world in 1997.  It was the first true dual effect pedal for guitar players, ever.  It was an immediate hit and the rest, as they say, is history.

Visual Sound is now TRUETONE, and the new V3 Series Jekyll & Hyde has been re-designed from scratch by Weil and RG Keen to meet the demands of today’s players.  With more flexibility, more great tones, and better construction than any of its predecessors, you’re going to love this new incarnation of a historically great pedal.

The distortion channel (a.k.a. “Hyde”) is the same great distortion that Hyde was always known for, but with 2 major upgrades.  It now includes a Bass knob which interacts with Treble so you can shape your tone precisely.  There is also a new Voice switch which allows you to choose between classic open distortion or a more saturated tone.

The overdrive channel (a.k.a. “Jekyll”) has changed completely, making it even more compatible with Hyde. Jekyll is now based on our old Open Road pedal, but with added Bass and Clean Mix knobs.

If you’ve used or owned a previous version of Jekyll & Hyde, you owe it to yourself to try out the new V3 version.

“Just got my V2 Jekyll and Hyde out of the box. By far the BEST distortion/overdrive ever. Haven’t even really had that much time to tweak it and it already sounds 100 times better than any pedal I’ve ever spent hours and hours tweaking. I think I just became brand loyal.” – Blake T.   (…and the V3 version is even better!)

Features

  •  Each channel can be set to either True Bypass mode or buffered, via internal switches. The buffered mode utilizes our legendary Pure Tone circuit.

  •  Lifetime Warranty… even for second or third owners.
  •  Separate inputs and outputs so each side of the pedal can be used in a loop device, or midi switcher. Also possible to reverse the order of effects with a patch cable. Just like having 2 pedals, but in 1 housing.
  •  Small, pedal board friendly size, with front mounted jacks. Smaller footprint than 2 MXR or similar sized pedals.
  •  Comes in a black velvet bag inside the package box.

Distortion Pedals

Distortion pedals create a heavier, more aggressive gain sound than most overdrive pedals, giving guitarists the sustain, bite and saturation needed for rock, punk, metal and hard-hitting lead tones. They can turn a clean amp into a high-gain platform or add an extra layer of intensity to an already driven sound.

Some distortion pedals are tight and modern, while others are raw, fizzy or vintage-inspired. Choosing the right one depends on whether you want chunky rhythm tones, singing sustain, scooped metal sounds or a classic hard-rock voice with plenty of attack.

Overdrive Pedals

Overdrive pedals add warmth, grit and amplifier-like breakup to your guitar tone. They can be used as a light always-on tone enhancer, a bluesy crunch box, a mid-focused solo boost or a way to push a valve amp into richer saturation.

Different overdrive circuits have very different personalities, from transparent low-gain pedals to classic mid-hump designs and heavier modern drives. They are one of the most important pedal types because they respond to picking dynamics, guitar volume and the character of your amplifier.

Distortion

Distortion pedals and related effects are commonly used by guitarists looking to shape their tone in a more focused and creative way. Different designs offer their own response, feel and tonal character depending on the style of music and the type of amplifier or guitar being used.

Many players build pedalboards gradually over time, combining different effects and utilities to create a setup that suits their own sound and workflow. Distortion related gear can play an important role in both live performance and studio recording.

Overdrive

Overdrive pedals recreate the sound of an amplifier being pushed harder, adding warmth, breakup and sustain while still responding naturally to picking dynamics and guitar volume changes. They are one of the most important and widely used pedal types in modern guitar rigs.

Different overdrive circuits offer very different flavours, from transparent low-gain boost-style pedals through to mid-focused classic rock tones and heavier amp-like saturation.
