By its very nature, compression is one of the most difficult effects to explain, but here goes… By controlling the maximum level of a signal, a compressor limits the dynamic range, while maintaining a higher average loudness. You can use compression to: reduce really loud passages; or bring up the level of the most-subtle nuance – and sustain it for days. You often feel compression more than you hear it, and when applied properly, it can either be sweet and smooth, or tight and punchy. Compressor pedals reduce dynamic range by turning louder peaks down and raising or sustaining the average level. Analogue

Analogue products use continuous audio circuitry for some or all of the signal path, so clipping, filtering or modulation arises from physical components rather than sampled algorithms. The label does not guarantee a particular tone; component choice, headroom, bias, noise and the surrounding gain stages still matter. Check whether the switching, presets, control section or cabinet stage is digital when the exact signal path is important.

Hybrid

Hybrid products combine analogue audio circuitry with digital control, conversion or processing. The useful question is which part of the signal path stays analogue and which functions—such as presets, filtering, modulation or USB—are handled digitally. This can provide hands-on response with modern recall, but latency, power and bypass behaviour vary. Check the signal path and routing rather than assuming the label describes the entire product.

True Bypass

True bypass removes the effect circuit from the audio path when bypassed, usually by mechanical, relay or switching circuitry. This can preserve the direct signal but does not automatically solve long-cable loading, and it may create a pop or leave no buffer for the rest of the board. Check the actual switching method, trails or spillover, input and output loading and the number of other true-bypass pedals in the chain.
