Distortion pedals use stronger or more deliberate clipping than a typical overdrive, adding harmonics, compression and sustain. Some are voiced to imitate a pushed amplifier; others offer tight modern gain, scooped aggression or abrasive, gated texture. Gain, tone, presence, bass, clipping options and output headroom determine how the pedal interacts with pickups and the next stage.
