Description
Inspired by the legendary “Nashville-style” overdrives that have powered the pedalboards of studio icons like Tim Pierce and Jerry McPherson, the Browne Amplification Alkene takes that familiar, organic character and gives it a modern twist. It keeps the musical clipping and natural, amp-like compression players love — but with way more control under the hood.
Dialled-in gain, restored mids & tight low end
Browne have fine‑tuned Alkene’s gain structure so the entire sweep feels usable, musical and never fizzy. They’ve brought back those all‑important mid frequencies so it doesn’t disappear in a mix, and the tightened low end delivers punch without the mud. The result? An overdrive with just the right amount of low‑mid “beef”, while staying beautifully touch responsive.
From crunchy rhythms to singing leads
Whether you’re laying down articulate, crunchy chord work or stepping out with smooth lead lines, the Alkene is the drive pedal you’ll keep clicking on. It’s versatile, dynamic and always musical.
Makes any amp feel great to play
We’ve all been there — you rock up to a gig, plug into a stiff, lifeless backline amp and instantly miss your setup at home. Alkene is the kind of pedal that can rescue those situations. It adds warmth, movement and just enough sag to make even the most stubborn amp feel lively and genuinely fun to play.
A quick starting point to hear the magic
If you want to hear Alkene at its best, set the Level around 2 o’clock, slowly bring in the Gain to taste and tweak the Tone until it slots perfectly into your mix. You’ll notice the amp sounding fuller, with a subtle compression that helps notes jump off the fingerboard.Key FeaturesAlkene expands on the original Atom circuit with two internal switches and one external clipping switch, giving you meaningful tonal options without overcomplicating things:
Asymmetrical Clipping (external switch): This external switch toggles between traditional symmetrical soft clipping and asymmetrical soft clipping. Right is stock symmetrical clipping, while left is asymmetrical clipping. Asymmetrical clipping allows the Green side to open up and bloom in a new way, delivering more punch, a wider feel and slightly less compression — perfect for players who want a more amp-like response.
More Clip (internal, top): This switch engages an alternate set of hard clipping diodes, adding extra bite, aggression and gain. Right for more clip, left for the stock setting. This mode slightly reduces output volume, so you’ll want to push the Level control higher. When using More Clip, Browne Amps highly recommend pairing it with Asymmetrical Clipping as a starting point.
Low Cut (internal, bottonm): The Low Cut (bass cut) switch lets you roll off just the right amount of low end to better fit your rig. Right is the stock setting, left is low cut enabled. If your setup already has plenty of low end, this switch tightens things up beautifully without thinning your tone.
