Have you ever wanted your guitar fuzz to sound like a synth? If not, why not? The Keeley Synth-1 pedal turns your plain, old guitar signal into a keyboard synth, cutting through with lightsaber-like whizz.

Keeley are well known for making unique pedals to spice up your standard guitar tone. The Synth-1 is yet another creative stompbox added to the line-up to do just that.

Sound

It acts as a wave generator, creating a beam of fuzz closely resembling a vintage analogue synth. It sounds great even if you’re just playing single-notes thanks to its lively character and depth.

Choose between three types of sound waves, varying from smooth drifts of fuzz, through aggressive square waves or abrupt attack. And you can change these on the fly with your foot using the three-way switch.

Controls

The Blend control mixes wet and dry signals, so you can use the Synth-1 subtly, or flood the natural tone with fuzzy goodness. The Filter dial alters tone depth even further. Attack changes the lead-in time – whether the effect enters as soon as note is played or if there’s a level of latency. Create slow reverse swells with this turned up high.

Its Chaos switch does exactly what it’s meant to do – wreak synthetic havoc. It adds random octaves, dimensional triggering and all sorts of artefacts to make the Synth-1 as unpredictable as possible.

Pedalboard Friendly

The Synth-1 is expression pedal compatible for similar use to a wah effect. Completed with true bypass and top-mounted jacks, making the Synth-1 an integral tool on your pedalboard for live use.

Specialist Effects Pedals

Specialist effects alter the signal in ways that do not sit cleanly inside one established family. They may use granular processing, frequency shifting, resonators, freeze or sustain, bit reduction, ring modulation, feedback networks or combinations of several techniques. The relevant distinction is the underlying process, its tracking or latency, and how completely the dry signal can be blended or replaced.

Tags

Analogue

The signal is shaped by continuously varying electronic circuitry rather than being converted into a digital effect algorithm. Component choice, operating voltage and circuit tolerances influence headroom, noise, clipping texture and the small variations in response between designs.

Synth

Generates or reshapes the signal through oscillator, filter and envelope behaviour associated with synthesis. Tracking, envelope response, pitch range, polyphony and dry blend determine whether the generated voice follows the instrument as bass, lead, pad or abstract texture.
