The Electro Harmonix Big Muff Pi is a legendary effects pedal, and since its introduction in 1969 it has undergone many refinements over the years. Culminating in a number of different iterations, none are as legendary as the initial V1 design.

Delivering a luxuriously smooth and creamy tone, the Triangle Big Muff Pi is a faithfully recreated version of the original V1 circuit. Available within a much smaller and more ergonomic enclosure, you can easily fit this huge-sounding pedal onto practically any pedalboard!

Trio of Controls

Believe it or not, the Electro Harmonix Triangle Big Muff gets its name from the positioning of its control set, and this reissue keeps that charming trait intact. Featuring Volume, Sustain and Tone knobs, you can easily produce a number of different sounds despite the stompbox's simple layout.

Volume is self-explanatory, however Sustain is far more interesting as it affects the overall gain structure. Turn it up high and you'll achieve that infamous violin-like sustain that the Big Muff Pi is renowned for, producing a bloated fuzzy sound that is perfect for leads. Keep the control low, and it'll deliver a more choppy and gated style distortion, which is more suited to rhythm playing and single-note riffs.

There's also more than meets the eye with the Tone knob too. Essentially a treble control, depending on where it's positioned you can start to hear interesting sub-harmonic frequencies coming through, akin to an octavia pedal. So whether you like to keep your top-end tone tame or searing, this single control can take you from subtle to extreme.

Modern Features

Apart from its far more pedalboard-friendly size, this reissue also has an LED effect status light like most modern pedals, which was missing on the originals. The Triangle Mig Muff Pi is also true bypass, meaning that it won't influence your unaffected signal when the pedal is disengaged.

Here's what Electro Harmonix says about the Triangle Big Muff Pi:

We have reissued the original Version 1 Big Muff and it’s dripping with vintage Electro-Harmonix DNA and tone. Dubbed the Triangle Big Muff because of the layout of its Volume, Sustain and Tone controls, this is the one that started it all. The new Triangle Big Muff is a faithful re-creation of the original circa 1969 circuit now housed in a pedalboard friendly, die-cast chassis.

Electro-Harmonix founder, Mike Matthews, says: “The Big Muff Pi is the pedal we are best known for so I wanted to commemorate EHX’s 50th Anniversary (1968-2018) by re-releasing V1, the very first Big Muff. Original pedals are now selling for hundreds of dollars and this reissue absolutely nails that creamy, violin-like sustain and musical tone at a price a working musician can afford.”

The Triangle Big Muff features the following nods to convenience: an LED to indicate effect status, true bypass switching and the option of being powered by a 9-volt AC adapter.
