The Earthquaker Hizumitas Sustainar Fuzz is a faithful recreation of the Elk BM Sustainar, the go-to distortion pedal for Japanese guitarist Wata. As one third of the genre-bending Japanese experimental band Boris, Wata has made a career or mixing killer riffs, searing melodic leads and controlled walls of feedback for almost three decades.

The Hizumitas delivers crushingly heavy distortion and fuzz tones with a smooth sustain and an underlying grit that sounds like the speakers are about to blow up! With incredible clarity and note definition, the Hizumitas is dynamic and versatile and responds to your playing excellently. Featuring an all-analogue signal path and true bypass circuitry, the Hizumitas is aggressive, yet articulate and is guaranteed to add a uniquely different dimension to your setup.

Controls

The Sustain control has a wide range of saturation, meaning even small changes will significantly affect the overall tone. Hizumitas responds excellently to all types of pickups and playing dynamics. Your power chords will sound huge and heavy, while open chords will be dynamic with fantastic note separation, and single note leads will come across smooth and powerful, especially with the neck pickup.

The Tone control can drastically change the character of the distortion in conjunction with the tone. Bass frequencies are boosted clockwise, and treble frequencies are boosted counter clockwise. The tone control can go from an aggressive mid-range grind to piercing highs as you turn it anti-clockwise. As you turn it clockwise, the mids become less present, the highs are tamed, and a humongous, thundering low end comes to the forefront. The Volume control offers massive output gain with unity at around 9-10 o'clock and beyond that, prepare to hear and feel the power of Hizumitas!

Fuzz Pedals

Fuzz drives the signal into extreme clipping, often flattening the waveform and generating a thick spectrum of harmonics. Transistor type, bias, input loading and tone filtering create markedly different responses, from loose and velvety to gated, spluttering or octave-rich. Some circuits interact strongly with pickup impedance and guitar volume, while others include buffers or blends for a more consistent response.

Tags

Analogue

The signal is shaped by continuously varying electronic circuitry rather than being converted into a digital effect algorithm. Component choice, operating voltage and circuit tolerances influence headroom, noise, clipping texture and the small variations in response between designs.

Bass

Voiced or equipped to retain low-frequency fundamentals and the higher headroom of a bass signal. Clean blends, crossovers and bass-specific filter ranges can preserve weight and articulation while the effected portion adds harmonics, movement or ambience.

True Bypass

Connects input directly to output through mechanical or relay switching when the effect is off, removing the active circuit from the audio path. It avoids buffer colour but leaves cable capacitance and switching design to influence high-frequency loss and possible switching noise.
