Back in August 2018, Fender announced its first wave of ground-breaking guitar pedals to much acclaim. The MTG Tube Distortion Pedal, released at Winter NAMM 2019, is one of the latest in a string of innovations from Fender HQ and is no exception.

A preamp tube-driven distortion pedal that enables guitarists to find that true breakup they’re so often searching for, without having to push amps to unbearable volume levels. The on-board three band EQ allows for bucket loads of tonal variety, whilst the option to polish your sound with a tightness control also exists. If that isn’t enough, you also have a separate foot switchable boost that has independent level and boost controls too! Complete freedom to create the sounds that you want.

Whether you play at home, record in a studio or perform live, rest-assured that the MTG Distortion pedal will soon be a staple on many boards. It was co-designed with the one and only Bruce Egnater (who has worked with artists such as Steve Vai, Phil Collen, Chris Poland, Kirk Hammett and many more) and tested by musicians. After several rounds of feedback and iterations the MTG was born.

The MTG Tube Distortion is packed full of features that you can both hear and see. It is an all-original Fender circuit, the chassis is crafted from lightweight, durable anodized aluminium, and the Amp Jewel LED gives your pedalboard the classic Fender look. Not to mention the cool subtle features and attention to detail that has become synonymous with the success of the Fender brand. You’ll find the ability to control the LEDs too.

Here's what Fender say about the MTG Tube Distortion

Many pedals try to emulate the sound of tube breakup; we decided instead of emulating tube distortion, we’d use actual vacuum tubes and give you the real deal in a compact pedal. The heart of the MTG’s design is a NOS (New Old Stock) US-made 6205 preamp tube. 3-Band EQ with Tight control and switchable boost—with its own Level and Boost controls—makes it easy to dial-in just the right sound.

Co-designed with Bruce Egnater, the MTG Tube Distortion is an all-original Fender circuit. To ensure this pedal is performance-ready we let musicians kick it around, took their feedback to heart and refined it. The chassis is crafted from lightweight, durable anodized aluminium, and the Amp Jewel LED gives your pedalboard the classic Fender look. The LED-backlit knobs show your control settings on a dark stage at a glance.

Use the MTG Tube Distortion on your next gig or session to bring the sound of true tube breakup to your rig.

About Fender

We have new and used Fender gear available on our website for fast direct delivery direct to you from across sellers in all areas of the USA & UK.

Fender is an iconic American musical instrument brand, widely recognised for its legendary guitars, amplifiers, and effects pedals. Founded in 1946 by Leo Fender, the company has shaped the sound of modern music with staples like the Stratocaster, Telecaster, and Precision Bass. Fender’s effects pedals, such as the renowned Fender Overdrive and the Fender Phaser, continue their tradition of offering versatile, high-quality tone-shaping tools. With a legacy that spans across genres, Fender pedals are trusted for their durability, classic sound, and timeless appeal.

Distortion

Distortion is a type of guitar effect that alters the sound by adding sustain, harmonic richness, and a gritty or aggressive character. It clips the audio signal, creating a more saturated and powerful tone. Distortion is commonly used in rock, metal, and punk music, offering everything from warm, crunchy overdrive to heavily saturated, high-gain chaos. Unlike overdrive, which mimics the natural breakup of a tube amp, distortion produces a more intense, compressed, and processed sound. Popular distortion pedals include the Boss DS-1, ProCo Rat, and MXR Distortion+.

Pedal

A pedal is an electronic device that alters the sound of an electric guitar by applying various effects. Pedals are typically connected in a series between the guitar and amplifier, allowing guitarists to switch effects on and off with their feet while playing.

This enables musicians to quickly and easily change their sound, adding versatility and creativity to their performances.

Pedals are essential tools in many musical genres, including rock, blues, jazz, and metal, allowing artists to craft distinctive and dynamic soundscapes.

Once you buy one, you can’t stop and then you have to sell them and buy more.

Tube

A tube pedal incorporates vacuum tube (valve) technology to deliver the warm, dynamic, and harmonically rich tone that many guitarists associate with classic valve amplifiers. Unlike solid-state or digital effects, tube-driven pedals provide natural compression, smooth breakup, and responsive touch sensitivity, making them a popular choice for overdrive, distortion, and preamp pedals.

Brands like Effectrode, Electro-Harmonix, and Victory produce high-quality tube pedals that enhance a player’s sound with real valve character. Whether used as a boost, preamp, or full-fledged overdrive, tube pedals add an organic warmth and depth that digital emulations often struggle to replicate, making them a prized addition to any serious guitarist’s rig.
