here at Just Pedals we love this JHS Pedals Moonshine Overdrive V2.

JHS are known for being perfectionists, and they often take their designs and improve them until they are the best they can be. The Moonshine V2 is a product of that ethos. With the charm of the original Moonshine intact, the V2 has extra refinements for better versatility and overall tone!

Versatile Tones:

The Moonshine is loved for its gnarly, gritty tone; essentially being a highly modified version of that famous green stomp box we all know and love. With many pedal manufacturers playing the “transparent” overdrive card a lot these days, the Moonshine is an unapologetically different beast with its own character and voice.

The V2 largely retains its unique “TS on steroids” sound, capable of delivering low-gain breakup to searing high-gain, thanks to its “Proof” toggle switch. The down position provides a mid-boosted tone with plenty of saturation and distortion on tap. Flick the switch up for a broader, more open crunch that is great for classic rock or blues.

Typical Drive, Tone and Volume controls give you enough flexibility to dial in your ideal overdrive tone, and with a pedal that sounds this good it should be easy!

What’s New?

The “Clean” knob is the biggest improvement to the Moonshine. Allowing you to blend between your clean, unaffected tone and the pedal’s distorted flavour, this control can let you achieve those timeless SRV-style tones.

Here’s what JHS say about the Moonshine Overdrive V2:

Are you looking for an overdrive that is not transparent and adds its own character and attitude? The Moonshine V2 is for you. The Moonshine V2 overdrive is a highly unique and massively tweaked version of the most famous overdrive ever created and housed in a little green enclosure. Blues, rock, country, jazz, and even hardcore/metal players will find this is an indispensable tool for shaping and creating unique mid heavy tones for almost any need.

The Moonshine V2 is still the core tone of version one and retains the simple  Volume, Tone, and Drive knobs.  However on the Moonshine V2 we added a new Clean knob to blend in any  amount of clean signal to your tone!  The simple 2-position “Proof ” toggle gives you everything from low gain amp-like breakup with powerful colored boost settings to grinding, heavy overdrive that reaches to the very edge of cranked amp distortion.

In the down position, you’ll find the highest gain settings, lots of saturation and sustain and the most mid-range goo available. In the up position are the more open and forceful crunchy tones that will make any amp beg for mercy. The up position also adds more overall volume and more headroom to those searching for cleaner applications.

The tone control goes down as smooth as Grandpa’s White Lightning, with none of the harsh ice-pick characteristics that many overdrives often have in the brighter settings.

Overdrive

Overdrive is a popular guitar effect that creates a warm, distorted sound by amplifying the signal of an electric guitar, typically using a pedal or an amp’s built-in circuit. The effect simulates the natural distortion that occurs when a tube amplifier is pushed to its limit, creating a rich, harmonic response that adds sustain, warmth, and character to the tone. Overdrive pedals are commonly used to add grit and growl to a clean tone without the harshness of full distortion.

The overdrive effect works by boosting the input signal, causing the amplifier to break up and clip the waveform, resulting in a smooth, musical distortion. This is often more subtle and less aggressive than other forms of distortion, making overdrive pedals ideal for blues, classic rock, and country players who seek a dynamic sound that responds to their playing touch. Overdrive pedals can be used in conjunction with other effects like delay and reverb to shape a more complex, evolving sound. Popular overdrive pedals include the Ibanez Tube Screamer, the Fulltone OCD, and the Boss OD-3, each offering different tonal characteristics, from smooth and bluesy to punchy and aggressive.

Pedals

Guitar pedals, also known as stompboxes, are external effects units that modify a guitar’s signal when activated. They come in various types, including distortion, overdrive, delay, reverb, modulation, EQ, compression, and synth effects, each shaping the tone in different ways. Pedals are typically placed on a pedalboard and powered by batteries or an external power supply. They can be connected in series for a custom signal chain, allowing guitarists to create unique sounds. Popular pedal brands include Boss, Electro-Harmonix, Strymon, MXR, and EarthQuaker Devices, offering effects for every genre, from blues and rock to ambient and experimental music.

v2

V2 stands for Version 2, meaning an updated or improved version of an existing pedal. Manufacturers release V2 models when they refine the circuit, add new features, improve build quality, or enhance performance based on user feedback.

For example, the Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi V2 had circuit changes compared to the original, and Strymon released V2 versions of their pedals with MIDI capabilities and upgraded DSP.If

you’re looking at a pedal labeled V2, it means it’s a newer revision with some level of improvement over the first version.
