Description

here at Just Pedals we love this Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer Overdrive Pedal.

The Ibanez Tube Screamer is possibly one of the most popular pedals on the planet. You will be hard pressed to find a guitarist without at least some kind of tube screamer in their pedal collection. It is mainly used in one of two ways as a smooth creamy overdrive which is amazing for blues and rock mid gain tones or as a boost pedal to take push a clean or overdriven amp. Every guitarist has somewhere they could use a TS9 so what are you waiting for!

As an Overdrive Pedal

While it may not be as smooth as the TS808 the TS9 still offers a beautiful overdrive sound that really makes the midrange pop out. This mid range peak is amazing in live situations when you need to pop through the mix for your next solo. Don’t want as much of a peak in the midrange? No problem just lower the tone control and you get a smoother rhythm overdrive tone.

As a Clean Boost

A lot of overdrive pedals with the gain turned down make great clean boosts but nothing sounds like a tube screamer. Even when turned down to 0 you still get a little bit of overdrive but the tone is more consistent with a clean boost like circuit. You just need to turn on this pedal once and you will hear how it just gives your clean sound that little bit of grit whenever you need it.

As a High Gain Boost

In recent years the metal guys have got their hands on tube screamers and have used them add a different dynamic to their high gain sounds. The tube screamer not only adds a bit of gain but also gives your sound more bite and attack which is what you need when you want to get into fast gated high gain rhythms.

Here’s what Ibanez say about the TS9 Overdrive Pedal

The Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer is a reissue that’s just like the original in so many ways. Same housing, same famous seasick-green paint, and the same crankin’ overdrive that made the original one of the all-time classic pedals. Guitar Player called it the best. Plug it in. Crank it up. You’ll hear what all the fuss is about. Tone, drive, and level controls.

Overdrive

Overdrive is a popular guitar effect that creates a warm, distorted sound by amplifying the signal of an electric guitar, typically using a pedal or an amp’s built-in circuit. The effect simulates the natural distortion that occurs when a tube amplifier is pushed to its limit, creating a rich, harmonic response that adds sustain, warmth, and character to the tone. Overdrive pedals are commonly used to add grit and growl to a clean tone without the harshness of full distortion.

The overdrive effect works by boosting the input signal, causing the amplifier to break up and clip the waveform, resulting in a smooth, musical distortion. This is often more subtle and less aggressive than other forms of distortion, making overdrive pedals ideal for blues, classic rock, and country players who seek a dynamic sound that responds to their playing touch. Overdrive pedals can be used in conjunction with other effects like delay and reverb to shape a more complex, evolving sound. Popular overdrive pedals include the Ibanez Tube Screamer, the Fulltone OCD, and the Boss OD-3, each offering different tonal characteristics, from smooth and bluesy to punchy and aggressive.

Pedal

A pedal is an electronic device that alters the sound of an electric guitar by applying various effects. Pedals are typically connected in a series between the guitar and amplifier, allowing guitarists to switch effects on and off with their feet while playing.

This enables musicians to quickly and easily change their sound, adding versatility and creativity to their performances.

Pedals are essential tools in many musical genres, including rock, blues, jazz, and metal, allowing artists to craft distinctive and dynamic soundscapes.

Once you buy one, you can’t stop and then you have to sell them and buy more.

Tube

Tube-sounding guitar effect pedals are celebrated for their ability to replicate the warm, rich, and dynamic tones associated with classic vacuum tube amplifiers.

These pedals emulate the natural harmonic distortion and compression produced by tube circuitry, which adds depth and character to the guitar’s sound. This results in a more organic and engaging tone with a pleasingly smooth overdrive that many musicians find desirable.

The warmth and complexity of tube emulation can enhance both subtle nuances and powerful lead tones, making it ideal for genres that favour vintage or classic sounds.

Tube-sounding pedals often provide greater responsiveness to playing dynamics, allowing for expressive performance variations based on how hard or softly you play.

This dynamic sensitivity ensures that the pedal’s effect adjusts naturally with your playing style, preserving the nuances of your technique. The harmonic richness and clarity achieved through these pedals offer a more detailed and full-bodied sound, which helps in achieving a distinctive tone that stands out in both live performances and studio recordings.

Despite the higher cost and occasional maintenance needs, the unique tonal qualities of tube-sounding pedals make them a favoured choice for guitarists seeking an authentic and versatile sound.
