You’ll love this if you’re a guitarist who wants to capture the classic ’69-’70 Jimi Hendrix fuzz sound that was thought to be lost to history. Although Jimi may have had a short career the effect he had on the music industry will last forever. From his unique style, impressive songwriting and adventurous guitar sounds everything about Jimi impressed a generation of players.  Part of that sound is in the Dunlop Band Of Gypsys Fuzz.

The Quest For Tone

The secret behind his Band Of Gypsys fuzz sound form some of his most iconic shows was thought to be lost forever. Dunlop however have been working hard to find out exactly what was in his one of a kind fuzz pedal that featured a red face and white knobs. They worked out over time that the sound came from a modified Octavio circuit with the high octave removed.

After developing it further we finally have the true Band Of Gypsys fuzz sound available in a mini fuzz face with all of the modern trimmings.

The Sound Of Innovation

When Jimi first hit the stage with his version of this pedal no one could believe the sound that was coming out of his amp. It was dirty, it was heavy and had so much low end. Well now this sound can be yours. Whether you are looking for that Jimi sound or just want an extreme fuzz that has a unique sound this pedal will work great for you.

Getting It Running

Because this is a mini fuzz face the worries of will it fit on my board are gone! It is small enough to fit in to any rig and simple enough to get set up in seconds. You just get 2 main controls with this fuzz face volume and fuzz. Keep the fuzz low for a more subtle effect or turn it all the way up to create a mind blowing fuzz sounds that dominate the stage. Please note that this pedal works off of an AC power supply.

Here’s what Dunlop say about the Jimi Hendrix Band Of Gypsys Fuzz

Over the course of ’69-’70, Jimi Hendrix appeared at his most noted live appearances-Live at Woodstock, Live at Berkeley, and Live at the Fillmore East-using a mysterious red Fuzz Face Distortion with white knobs. That fuzz box sounded like a completely different animal from any of the other Fuzz Face pedals in Jimi’s arsenal, snarling with a far more aggressive, biting tone.

The pedal itself has been lost to history, but its unmistakably unique tone lives on in the recordings of those three iconic shows, and Hendrix aficionados have tried to cop that sound for years. We are happy to say that their tonal quest can finally come to a glorious end.

Poring tirelessly over all of the different customized circuit designs Jimi used over the years, our engineers narrowed down this elusive fuzz tone to a version of the Octavio circuit that didn’t have the octave up signal. After making a few tweaks, they nailed it with the Band of Gypsys Fuzz Face Mini Distortion.

Fuzz

Fuzz is a distinctive type of distortion effect used in guitar playing, known for producing a thick, saturated, and buzzy tone. Unlike other distortion effects that aim to mimic the sound of overdriven tube amplifiers, fuzz pedals create a more extreme and aggressive distortion by severely clipping the guitar signal. This results in a unique sound characterized by rich harmonics, extended sustain, and a pronounced edge. Key features of fuzz pedals include gain, tone, and level controls. The gain control adjusts the amount of distortion applied to the signal, with higher settings producing more aggressive tones. The tone control allows musicians to shape the frequency response of the effect, ranging from dark and bass-heavy to bright and treble-focused sounds. Lastly, the level control sets the overall output, ensuring that the fuzz effect matches the volume of the rest of the signal chain or amplifier.

Fuzz pedals are popular across various music genres, particularly in rock, blues, and psychedelic music, due to their ability to enhance different guitar-playing styles. For rhythmic riffs, fuzz pedals create thick and aggressive tones with plenty of sustain and grit, adding depth to power chords, riffs, and palm-muted passages. In lead solos, they allow guitarists to achieve soaring, saturated tones with singing sustain and harmonically rich overtones, helping solos stand out in a mix.

Fuzz pedals are versatile tools for creating experimental sounds, capable of producing oscillating feedback, glitchy textures, and otherworldly tones when pushed to their extremes. Overall, fuzz pedals offer guitarists a powerful means of shaping their tone and adding character to their playing. Whether used subtly for warmth or dialled up for extreme distortion, fuzz pedals inspire creativity and expand the sonic palette of any guitarist.
